I am frugal by nature. I've caught myself counting toilet paper squares. My shoes must last 10 years. And why must I pay someone when I can do it myself. It's not the best trait, and I work hard to be balanced. But sometimes, I can't let something go.
The first time a friend mentioned a certain electrolyte product that Rehidrates you, I looked at the ingredients. Being in the supplement industry, I worked out the raw material cost. It was about 16c complete. But it sells for R22. And it made me mad.
I understand that there needs to be profit and there are distribution costs, but 13 650% markup seems excessive. And this is common in the pharma/supplement industry.
I checked out Kids Multivitamin gummies as well. The cost of the vitamins etc in 5 brands cost between 0.4c and 5c. Yes, less than 1c. But they sell for over R150. So I made my own version with 100% of RDA in each gummy. And it didn't work. Why? Because you literally can't put enough good ingredients in a gummy. It stops being a gummy, and ends up being a big soggy mess of sugar and vitamins. Hard to sell to fussy kids. Maybe if I put Spiderman on it?
